    Questions

    What's a HEIC file?

    It's the photo format iPhones use by default since iOS 11. It takes about half the space of a JPG, but plenty of Windows apps, websites and upload forms still won't open it.

    JPG or PNG?

    JPG for almost everything. It's small and opens anywhere. PNG keeps every pixel exactly but makes files several times larger, so use it only when an app or print shop asks for it.

    Will I lose quality?

    At quality 90 most people can't tell the copy from the original. The file is usually bigger than the HEIC, because JPG packs photos less tightly.

    Does it keep Live Photo motion or depth effects?

    No. You get the main still photo. Portrait-mode blur stays, because it's baked into that still.

    Can I stop my iPhone from making HEIC files?

    Yes. Open Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and pick Most Compatible. New photos save as JPG. Photos you already took stay HEIC.

    Huge photos fail on my phone. Why?

    Phone browsers cap how big an image they'll process at once. If a 48-megapixel photo fails, pick "Fit inside 4096 px", or convert it on a computer.
